Confederation Bridge opens exceptionally to Terry Fox Run participants, offering a rare chance to cross the world’s longest bridge over ice-covered waters while supporting cancer research.
An iconic infrastructure, mobilized to unite communities across Canada
Toronto, ON, May 26, 2025 – The Terry Fox Foundation and Confederation Bridge, operated by Strait Crossing Bridge Limited, a company owned by VINCI Highways and Strait Crossing Inc., are proud to announce the return of the Terry Fox Run on the Confederation Bridge, taking place on Sunday, September 21, 2025, in honour of the 45th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope.
For this occasion, the Confederation Bridge will be exceptionally open to runners and walkers, offering a rare and unforgettable opportunity to cross this iconic link between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island on foot. Spanning 12.9 kilometers over the Northumberland Strait, the Confederation Bridge is the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered waters. A feat of engineering, the Bridge stands as a national symbol of resilience and connection, values that resonate deeply with Terry Fox’s legacy.
The Terry Fox Run on Confederation Bridge was first held in 2005 and has since become a signature event in the Foundation’s history. Cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, its 2025 return marks a deeply meaningful moment for communities across Canada and a powerful tribute to the spirit that started it all. In 1980, Terry Fox began the Marathon of Hope, an ambitious run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. His determination, courage, and message of hope moved millions and laid the foundation for what has become one of the largest fundraising movements in Canadian history. When Terry reached Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick in late May 1980, he was warmly welcomed by local communities. He arrived on PEI via ferry from Cape Tormentine to Borden on May 24, and noted in his journal after meeting students and officials: “Boy, were they ever a happy group.” During his three-day run across the Island, Terry reached a major milestone — $100,000 raised for cancer research.
Bringing the run back to Confederation Bridge for the fourth time is both a celebration of this legacy and a testament to the shared values of unity and service that define both Terry Fox’s story and the bridge itself. To support this remarkable event, the Terry Fox Foundation and the Confederation Bridge staff are working together to organize a safe and pleasant run for all participants.
Registration is now open and free of charge, but advance registration is required. No on-site registration will be available. Participants are welcome to walk or run, and parking will be provided on both sides of the bridge. To give Canadians across the country a chance to be part of this historic run, the Terry Fox Foundation has launched a nationwide contest to send two supporters to Prince Edward Island for the weekend. To enter, follow @terryfoxfoundation on Instagram, register for any 2025 Terry Fox Run, and secure 10 sponsors. Details at terryfox.org/PEI.

“As the starting point of his Marathon of Hope 45 years ago, Atlantic Canada was an incredibly special part of Terry’s journey. The return of the Terry Fox Run on Confederation Bridge in 2025 is not only a celebration of Terry’s legacy, but a heartfelt reminder of the unity and support that these communities offered him and an opportunity for Canadians to once again come together and help to finish what he started.” – Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother
“The Confederation Bridge serves to connect territories and communities. Welcoming the Terry Fox Run is another meaningful way of fulfilling that role. Our teams will be fully mobilized to support the event, just as they are every day for the people who rely on the bridge. We are proud to be hosting the Run for the fourth time in support of the cancer research in Canada, reflecting a long-term commitment and the strength of the partnership.” – Cécile Brandão, President of Strait Crossing Bridge Limited, concessionaire of the bridge
