A BRIEF HISTORY
Terry was adamant that money raised in his name be used to support research into all types of cancer. During the Marathon of Hope, and for a number of years afterwards, donations were channeled through the Canadian Cancer Society. It quickly became clear that what the country needed – what cancer patients needed – was a national organization dedicated to the pursuit of innovative, life-changing cancer research.
In 2007, the Terry Fox Foundation established the Terry Fox Research Institute with an initial commitment of $50 million over five years. Along with the support of the Foundation’s generous donors, TFRI has cultivated the trust and confidence of the Government of Canada and other funding partners to create a sustainable pipeline of impact-driven research, collaboration, and impact.

In the same way Terry united us to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, TFRI’s programs and awards bring researchers together, create partnerships that push the boundaries of cancer research, and improve patients’ quality – and quantity – of life.
For almost two decades, TFRI has supported the very best cancer researchers across Canada through its highly-competitive, independently-adjudicated grants and awards programs.
One of the many features that sets TFRI apart from other scientific organizations, is that it operates as an “institute without walls,” linking 132 leading cancer care and research institutes, hospitals, and universities right across the country. In addition to its headquarters in Vancouver, TFRI has satellite offices in Toronto, London, Montreal, Moncton, and Halifax.
