Tessa’s Next Mile:
"When I was three months old, doctors had to remove my right eye to prevent cancer from spreading to my brain. I lived cancer-free until age 13, when I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in my leg— the same cancer Terry Fox had 41 years ago. It wasn’t until I was about halfway through seven months of intense, high-dose chemotherapy and a 13-hour life-saving amputation surgery that it hit me: Terry is truly, without a doubt, my hero. In my moments of weakness, I remembered Terry’s courage and began to find and grow into my own. At 23, I’ve now reached my next mile. I’m graduating with my BA in English and working as a journalist, speaker and humanitarian. I want more young people who face cancer to have stories like mine but more than anything, I want young people to stop facing cancer. The next mile starts with you!"
