Terry Fox Runs provide funding to Brazilian hospital studying high prevalence of breast cancer amongst young women

VANCOUVER, CANADA May 7, 2020 – Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women around the world. This is also the case in Latin America, where 27 per cent of cases occur in women under the age of 45. The high percentage of cases in young women is an anomaly, but the reasons why it occurs are still unknown.

To better understand this phenomenon, researchers across the region launched PRECAMA (Molecular Subtypes in Premenopausal Breast Cancer in Latin American Women), a multicenter study seeking to understand how different factors such as lifestyle, environment, ancestry and genetics interact to increase the risk of breast cancer, specifically in young women.

Led by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), PRECAMA is being developed in large hospitals and cancer research centers in Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Brazil, where patients between the ages of 20 and 45 are being recruited.

In Brazil, the study is led by the Hospital de Amor (Hospital de Câncer de Barretos) in Sao Paulo, which has recently received important funding from The Terry Fox Foundation with funds raised by Terry Fox events held at Maple Bear Schools throughout Brazil and a Terry Fox Run at the Canadian High School Colegio Santo Agostinho – Nova Lima Unit. According to the researchers, the funds will ensure the project’s continuity and increase its chances of success, supporting the inclusion of new researchers and professionals totally dedicated to it.
