“Getting” Terry

April 11th, 2018|

"Getting" Terry  - I've lived in Canada since 2007, but my first visit here from England was in the summer of 1980. I was here as a 15-year-old, on vacation with my parents and staying with family in Kitchener, ON. I don't remember much about that visit, but I do recall seeing a one-legged man on TV, running with an unusual technique, and a catchy "Run, Terry, Run" jingle in the background. I had no idea what this was all about and didn't pay too much attention. Heading back home after my vacation, I never thought about Terry [...]

My friend Terry Fox

April 11th, 2018|

My friend Terry Fox The first time I saw Terry Run was on a dark, lonely highway in rural New Brunswick at 4:30 in the morning. Although I had talked to Terry several times by phone, it was mid-June before we actually met. I had flown overnight to Quebec City, driving on to Edmonston, New Brunswick where I knew Terry had finished the day before. I climbed into the back seat of my rental and caught a chilly two hours of sleep. At 4 a.m., I was awoken by the of the motel door opening and was met by three [...]

It started with my dad…

April 10th, 2018|

It started with my dad... It started with my Dad. He worked road construction in an area where Terry Fox was training for his epic journey. My Dad would come home and tell us about this crazy kid he would see running up the backside of this mountain, on one leg. One particularly miserable day, my Dad stopped and offered Terry a ride. Terry’s reply was “No thank you. This is what I do.” My Dad shook his head and drove off wondering why and thinking this kid was a little nuts. April 12, 1980 arrived and he [...]

My lasting impression

April 10th, 2018|

My lasting impression “I first saw Terry Fox running west on Dundas Street in downtown London. It was an incredibly hot humid day. The streets were packed. The excitement palpable. “Here he comes, I can see him!" I was transfixed. Clumping along in that awkward, never to be forgotten lope of his. Tears rushed to my eyes - his determined smile masking the pain that must have accompanied his every step. Monies in every form we’re rushed forward to fill the proffered bags held by Terry’s running compatriots collecting for the fight against cancer - on the Marathon of [...]

A Shared Canadian Experience

April 10th, 2018|

A Shared Canadian Experience I was ten years old in 1980 when I first saw Terry Fox. Our family was one that paid attention to the national news. I grew up in a time when you could count the number of television networks on one hand, and the newspaper I read was made of paper, the only option. As soon as I heard Terry's story, on April 12th, 1980, I was inspired, and I was added to what would become a long list of his supporters, admirers, and those who called him their hero. Every morning and evening, I [...]

Hoping To Meet A Hero

April 10th, 2018|

Hoping To Meet A Hero Terry had inspired me tremendously in 1980, & has ever since with his Marathon Of Hope. Motivated by Terry I decided it was time to live my dream, while hoping to meet up with my Hero to say hi and thanks. My dream was to cycle from Vancouver to Halifax. On Sept 4th I dipped my ten speed cycle wheels into the Pacific inspired by Terry who had done so on the other side of Canada with his leg. Our home town volunteer fire department supported my dream, as well as folks from home [...]

Terry and my Ultra Triathlon story, Over $23k and counting!

April 10th, 2018|

Terry and my Ultra Triathlon story, Over $23k and counting! I have been a fan of Terry Fox ever since I was eight years old, when my parents took me to see him as he ran north of Gravenhurst, on his way to Parry Sound. I have participated in his run in Toronto, spoken about him during a corporate motivational speech, and think of him often, particularly when I need inspiration during my triathlon/ironman/marathon events. To me, Terry is synonymous with endurance, determination and passion for helping others. August 4/5/6 2018 I will be one of 30 international participants [...]

Terry is now a part of my life

April 10th, 2018|

Terry is now a part of my life In April 1980, I was working hard at my first career job, working long hours, and traveling two streetcars, and two buses to return at night to my apartment. I made sure to arrive home by 11pm in order to catch Harvey Kirck and Lloyd Robertson on CTV news. They had begun to include a nightly news piece on a handsome young man, a year younger than me, who was running across the country. Terry Fox was a magnet – I was drawn into his story and have never left it. [...]

I ran with Terry

April 9th, 2018|

I ran with Terry I was training for the Mtl Marathon. As a journalist with radio station CJAD I was asked to cover his arrival in Mtl by greeting him on the Jacques Cartier bridge and running him into the center of town. Accompanied by the CBC's Sta Gibbons and Peter Della Riva, place kicker for the Mtl Alouettes we accompanied him the 6-7 km to destination stopping a couple of times along the way for live interviews on the radio. I remember how impressed we were that he would run a full (42km) marathon every day on one [...]
