About the Books…

Penguin Random House Canada is proud to announce a partnership with the Fox Family to mark the 40th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope, beginning with the publication this summer of new books from two of its imprints with proceeds going to The Terry Fox Foundation to support cancer research.

On September 1, Viking Canada will publish Forever Terry: A Legacy in Letters, comprising 40 letters from 40 contributors who give voice to the inspiration, dedication, and perseverance that Terry Fox embodied. Edited by Terry’s younger brother Darrell Fox on behalf of the Fox Family, contributors range from Margaret Atwood, Bobby Orr, Jann Arden, and Christine Sinclair, to those who escorted Terry on his run. Forever Terry is a testament to the influence Terry Fox has had on the shape of Canadian dreams, ambitions, and commitment to helping others. Their reflections, which reveal connections between inspiring Canadians that readers will never have expected, appear alongside never-before-seen photos of Terry.

On August 4, Tundra Books will publish Terry Fox and Me, a children’s picture book written by Mary Beth Leatherdale and illustrated by Milan Pavlović. Written from the perspective of Terry’s best friend, Doug Alward, the book tells the true story of how two friends supported, challenged, and helped each other become better athletes and people. Doug was by Terry’s side every step of the way: when Terry received a diagnosis of cancer in his leg, when he was learning to walk – then run – with a prosthetic leg, and when he was training for the race of his life. Containing photos and notes from Doug Alward and Terry’s brother Darrell, the book is a celebration of friendship and, ultimately, Terry’s message of hope and determination.

Penguin Random House Canada will donate to The Terry Fox Foundation all author proceeds from Forever Terry, as well as a portion of the proceeds from Terry Fox and Me. They have also donated 2,500 copies of Terry Fox and Me for distribution to schools across the country. Tundra Books will also create a teacher’s guide and materials to support classroom readings and in-school Terry Fox activities.
