Terry Fox Foundation Funded ResearchAfter Terry lost his leg to cancer, he discovered that funding for cancer research in Canada was minimal. The motivation for his Marathon of Hope was to raise funds to help find a cure for cancer. The Foundation remains true to Terry’s wishes today by directing all funds raised in his name to cancer research. The research funding provided by the Terry Fox Foundation is designed to stimulate Canadian investigators in a very broad spectrum of research having relevance to cancer. The research areas relevant to the Foundation’s mandate are Biological Sciences (studies in the biochemistry, genetics, immunology and molecular biology of cancer), Chemical Sciences (studies in carcinogenesis, drug development and drug delivery) and Physical Studies (studies in imaging, radiobiology and photobiology). Introducing the Terry Fox Research InstituteTerry Fox had a way of giving Canadians a new fresh way to look at their country, the geography, the distances and the differences of people. He effectively transformed the distances between people by inviting them to focus on what could bring us together rather than divide us. Terry was able to close a gap and unite a nation around a common cause. In that same spirit, The Terry Fox Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of The Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI).Our vision at The Terry Fox Research Institute is to improve significantly the outcomes of cancer research for the patient by having teams of academic and clinical researchers work completely in concert with one another sharing insights and knowledge and discoveries all with a focus to improve patient care by quickly generating practical outcomes from their research. The TFRI will fund and manage research projects that link hospitals, cancer organizations and universities together provincially and nationally. For more information please visit www.tfri.ca |
